(PAINESVILLE, OH) - The Lake Catholic Cougars hosted the Glenville Tarblooders in Riverside Stadium in Painesville on Friday night for the right to go to the Division IV, Region 13 final. Lake Catholic entered the game with an undefeated record of 12-0 while Glenville was 9-3 playing a very tough schedule.
Glenville won the toss and deferred. Lake Catholic received the ball first. The rain was falling for most of the game. Lake Catholic's senior quarterback Frankie Trinetti was trying to spread the ball around on the first drive to senior wideout Patrick Radigan and tight end DJ Sears. The drive was stopped when Glenville's junior running back/defensive back Chris Newell Jr intercepted the ball in the endzone.
The game was a will of two staunch defenses. Neither of whom wanted to give up the first score of the game.
The tie would be broken as Glenville's junior defensive back Aaron Scales intercepted a pass on the Tarblooders own 8-yard line and weaved in and out of Lake Catholic players taking the ball 92-yards for a pick six and the first score of the game with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
On the first play of the next drive, Glenville would again get a turnover on another interception, this time by freshman defensive back Jaylen Edwards. Lake Catholic would stop the drive on a forth and long with a sack from Cougar senior defensive end Jayson Cummings.
Glenville's defense was just too much as freshman DB Jaquan Gibson would intercept the ball yet again for the Tarblooders. This time the turnover would be converted into points as Chris Newell Jr would score on a three-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good.
Glenville had four interceptions in the first five drives of the game, and took a 13-0 lead in the locker rooms at halftime.
The third quarter is again where both defenses would hunker down not give up a score.
Glenville's sophomore defensive end Kaylon Bailey caused a forced fumbled (to go along with his two sacks on the night) and was recovered by senior Christian McAlpine, setting up a 17-yard rushing touchdown by sophomore Romell Phillips. After a successful two point conversion the score was 21-0.
Phillips would score again on the next Glenville possession this time on a 23-yard dash up the field, extending the lead 28-0.
Glenville would again get an interception again from a fresh face in the form of senior Isaiah McCullum. Glenville had six turnovers by six different players in the game on Friday. Lake Catholic's offense and defense played their hearts out and never gave up, but in the end the Tarblooders would run out the clock and get the victory with a final of 28-0.
Glenville coach Ted Ginn was asked about his defense. "Defense has been holding us up all year. They are unbelievable. I'm proud of the kids." Coach Ginn went on to praise Lake Catholic and its coaching staff.
The Cougars coach Marty Gibbons talked about the great season the players had especially the seniors. "All the kids that are seniors were around watching our state championship run a few years ago. We weren't very good their freshman and sophomore years, but now we have a lot of talent in the younger groups and it's a credit to those guys (seniors) kind of reestablishing our program, we have a lot of great kids coming back to which is exciting."
With the win, Glenville moves on to the regional final where they will be taking on the second seeded Perry Pirates, who earlier in the night routed Streetsboro 45-21. The game will take place at a neutral site that has yet to be determined.
