Captains missed opportunities result in 5-4 loss to Silver Hawks BY TIMOTHY W. SHIRER SPORTS EDITOR Generally when a team leaves 13 runners on base in a nine inning baseball game thing are probably not going to turn out well. That was the case on Wednesday afternoon when the Lake County Captains took on the South Bend Silverhawks at Classic Park. The Captains stranded 13 runners on the base path and fell to the Silver Hawks 5-4 in front of 4,375 fans in attendance.
The Captains stranded baker's dozenn of runners on base in the game, but the pitching of Captains starting pitcher Felix Sterling early in the game did not help the team's effort. Sterling gave up two runs to the Silver Hawks in the first inning. Sterling allowed a single to Chris Ellison to lead of the game. Sterling then balked to move Ellison to second base. Sterling then retired the next two Silver Hawks, but could not get out of the inning unscaved. With Ellison still on second base, Matt Helm slammed a Sterling fastball over the left center field fence for his third home run of the season. The longball put South Bend on top 2-0..
The Silver Hawk tallied their third run off Sterling in the second inning when with two outs Ender Inciarte singled to center field. Inciarte came home when the next batter Raul Navarro doubled into the right field corner. The Silver Hawks were now on top 3-0.
The Captains fought back with two runs in the third inning. with one out in the inning Zach MacPhee singled to left field and Luigi Rodriguez followed with his third home run of the season. The home run cut the Silver Hawks lead to one run at 3-2.
The Silver Hawks added a fourth run in the top of the fourth inning when Sterling issued a base on balls to Fidel Pena to lead off the inning. The big right hander then retired then next two batters. Sterling could not get out of the inning without damage as he then allowed single to Inciarte and Pena moved to second base. Pena then stole third base and on an errant throw by Sterling trying to throw Pena out at third, the ball skipped past third baseman Leonardo Castillo and Pena scored South Bends fourth run.
The Captains did show the had some fight in them as they tied he game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth. With one out in the inning Silver Hawks starter Tyler Green hit Todd Hankins with a pitch and then Castillo tripled to right field and Hankins came home with the Captains third run. Green then walked Robe Garcia. Garcia then stole second base. Finally MacPhee singled sharply to right field and Castillo scored to tie the game at 4-4. MacPhee who has been on fire lately is hitting .346 (9 for 26) in hist last six games. In that span he has two home runs and a double.
