Monday night at Quicken Loans Arena, the Cleveland Cavaliers held their annual intra-squad Wine & Gold Scrimmage, which showcased the team’s 2015 training camp roster in front of fans for the first time. While the event was nothing more than a glorified practice, it was the first time a version of the Cavs roster has been on its home court since Cleveland’s crushing defeat to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in June.

Monday night in front of 14,480 enthusiastic fans, LeBron James recorded six points with two rebounds in just 12 minutes of the 51-minute affair. The stat line was insignificant, while James confirmed the most important outcome of the scrimmage.

“No one got hurt,” James said. “It was a great turnout. Our fans are unbelievable. On a Monday night, to have that many fans is unbelievable. We accomplished one thing, and that was do not get hurt — And play hard, and we did that.”

Escaping a scrimmage with no injuries was the goal, and the Cavs accomplished their mission. Several Cavaliers, who are recuperating from injuries watched the scrimmage from the bench, including Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and Iman Shumpert, who flashed a neon pink cast on his injured right wrist. Despite the three players’ absence, the event had a boisterous feel as fans cheered the non-active and active participants.

“It’s just fun to get back on the court with our home fans and some of the best fans in the world, if not the best,” James said. “To see them turnout tonight like they did on a Monday night for a scrimmage is unbelievable.”

There were several highlights during the exhibition, including seeing Anderson Varejao on an NBA court for the first time since he tore his left Achilles tendon last December. Varejao has shown no effects from the injury and has been a full participant in the Cavs’ training camp.

“It was great to be out there in front of the best fans in the NBA,” Varejao said. “It was great. Since December, I haven’t played any sports. I didn’t play basketball, so it was great.

“It was good to be back. I know I have to take baby steps. The fans came here tonight to support us. They are looking forward to a good season. We are here. We’re going to work hard every day. We’re going to do our best this season to try to get a championship.”

For the Cavs to capture a championship, a dose of good health will have to be on their side. Such wasn’t the case in the playoffs last season, which ultimately cost the Cavs a title.
