Blue Devils complete 6-0 regular season with 54-14 win

Friday night the Wickliffe Blue Devils Football team was attempting to do something that had only been done once in school history and the was finish off a perfect regular season. After turnovers by both teams to start the game and two punts by both teams to start the contest. the Blue Devils took control and never looked back as they pounded the Lutheran East Falcons 54-14 to finish the shortened regular season 6-0.
Wickliffe’s first points of the game came with 1:13 left on the first quarter clock when Senior Mason Bala scored on a one-yard run. Senior Isaiah Bolon capped of the drive converting the extra point and giving the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead. The key play of the drive was a 26-yard run by Senior Chase Fortkamp who scampered for a 26-yard run. That was just the beginning of another big night for Fortkamp a Division 1 college recruit.
The Blue Devils stopped the Falcons on a three and out forcing a punt and just :39 into the second quarter Wickliffe got on the board for the second time as Fortkamp took the ball 35 yards for the touchdown. Bolon could not convert the extra point and Wickliffe led 13-0.
Over the next 6:29 the Blue Devils put four more touchdowns on the board aided by a fumble recover by Senior Mikey Moon and a kickoff recovery by Senior Danny Byrne. Fortkamp was responsible for three of the four TD’s as he ran 46, 72 and 51 yards to the endzone. The other TD during the Blue Devils Blitzkrieg was scored by another Senior Donnell Jackson as he took the ball in from 13 yards out. After the dust settled the Blue Devils led 40-0 with 4:52 remaining in the first half.
With the Blue Devils leading 40-0 at halftime Fortkamp’s night running the ball was over as he totaled 289 yards on nine carries in the half.
The two teams traded scores in the second half as Wickliffe played some of their younger players as the score ended at 54-14 with the Falcons getting on the board when Senior Quarterback Osei Mattocks ran one yard for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good.
The two Blue Devils TD’s in the second half came courtesy of Senior Jacob Lewis as he scampered to pay dirt from 47 and eight yards for touchdowns. Lewis was Wickliffe’s second leading rusher in the game with 115 yards on seven carries. Wickliffe totaled 462 yards offense, 460 came on the ground on 36 carries.
Once again, the Wickliffe defense forced turnovers to turn the tide of the game as they intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles, two of the three resulted in TD’s.
The Blue Devils will have a bye next week as they are the number two seed in Division VI, Region 21. Wickliffe will host the winner of Smithville and East Canton on October 17 at Wickliffe Memorial Field at 7:00 p.m. It will be the first time Wickliffe has ever hosted a playoff contest in football.
