The Lake County Captains returned home on Thursday night with a three game winning streak looking to make it four games. Thanks to a seventh inning three run home run by Captains left fielder Bobby Ison the Captains came back to defeat the Loons 3-2 in front of a small April crowd of 1,004.
The Loons got on the board first in the second inning. With one out and a runner on first base in Garrett Kennedy doubled to center field and Brandon Davis who reached base on a base on balls scored the Loons first run, Kennedy advanced to third on the play when Captains catcher Francisco Mejia failed to catch the ball on a throw at the plate. After Captains starter Sam Hentges struck out Nick Dean for the second out of the inning Christian Gomez reached on a throwing error by Willi Castro and Kennedy scored the Loons second run.
The two runs, only one earned given up by Hentges in the second were the only runs he allowed in four innings. Hentges struck out eight Loons, issued two base on balls and allowed three hits. Brock Hartson came in to relieve Hentges to start the fifth inning. Hartson went three scoreless innings allowing only two hits, striking out four and issuing two base on balls to pick up the win and improve to 1-0 on the year with a 0.00 ERA. Hartson just joined the Captains this afternoon. Christian Miester finished the game on the mound for Lake County picking up the rare two inning save. The save was Meister's first of the season.
The Captains and Loons will play game two of their four game series on Friday night. Righthander Nolan Long will make the start for Great Lakes. Long is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. The Captains will counter with Matt Esparza. Esparza also a righty is 0-1 with a 24.30 ERA
