The Lake County Captains lost a pitcher’s duel on Thursday and were right back in action on Friday night against the South Bend Cubs to conclude their three game series. The Captains were looking for their fourth straight series win, unfortunately things did not go the Captains way as they were bombed by the Cubs 11-7.

The Captains got on the board early in the first inning when Willi Castro and Jodd Carter had back to back singles to begin the inning, putting men on first and third. Martin Cervenka then hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Castro scored the first run of the game. After David Armendariz lined out, Jose De La Cruz followed with a double, driving home Carter, giving Lake County a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs fought back to tie the game at 2-2 with single runs in the second and fourth innings.

Then in the fifth inning everything fell apart as Captains starter Casey Shane loaded the bases and it did not end well as Eloy Jimenez came to the plate and blasted a home run over the left field wall giving South Bend a 6-2 lead. The home run for Jimenez was his 12th long ball of the season. The Cubs put two more runs on the board off reliever Leandro Linares and when the inning ended the Cubs lead was 8-2.

The Cubs added three more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 11-2.

The Captains cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs. The Captains totaled six hits in the inning, unfortunately two runners were thrown out on the play question decision to try to take home in a game when the Captains trailed by such a large amount.

Lake County pulled a little closer in the bottom of the seventh inning with two more runs on a two run single by De La Cruz, to put the score at 11-7.

Starting pitcher Kyle Miller picked up the win for the Cubs. With the win Miller improves to 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA. Shane took the loss for the Captains and falls to 5-9 with a 5.06 ERA.

The Captains will begin a seven game road trip on Saturday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps in Comstock Park, Michigan
