(WILLOUGHBY, OH) - A geomagnetic storm is heading towards Earth. No. It's not going to end life as we know it, but it will hit Earth's magnetic field allowing for the Northern Lights also known as the Aurora Borealis to be seen in Northeast Ohio.
The Cleveland area was treated to a spectacular Aurora this last May as the Sun has been firing off solar flares at a more rapid rate due to it being in the most active part of its 11-year solar cycle.
Solar Storms are given a rating based on the intensity and characteristics of the storm. The scale is a simple level one to level five rating scale. The one that will hit today is classified as a level four, the of the level of the storm that hit the Earth in May was a level five. While the Space Weather Prediction Center advises that there could be some disruptions to satellite communications and operations, the storm in May had little to no effect.
The best time to view the Aurora will be between 10:00 pm Thursday night through 4:00 am Friday morning. The weather forecast for the Greater Cleveland area is a cool night with clear skies, perfect for viewing a natural wonder that most never get a chance to see.
If you are looking for a fun activity for yourself or your family on a Thursday night, just put on a sweater, take a few steps outside and look up at the stars over Northeast Ohio.
