America's best sport talk show host Amy Lawrence signs off Monday Morning, a big loss for her fans
Opinion by Tim Shirer

For the past nine years, Monday through Friday, I have driven my wife to work anywhere 3 am to 5 am. The one constant in those nearly nine years was hitting the button on the radio in my car turning on 92.3. This is the only time of the day I listen to that station. When I hit the button, I heard the voice of, in my opinion the best national radio host currently on the airwaves, Amy Lawrence.

I never knew of her before turning on the radio that night in June of 2016, what I found out quickly was I liked listening to her and her views on sports and other things that she sometimes talked about. I also liked the fact that she never insulted athletes, guests, or callers unless they insulted her first and then most of the time, she took the high road and got back on topic.

There were a few instances over the years I (Tim from Cleveland) called into her show, and we did not always agree, sometimes it got heated, but she was always respectful even when jabbing me for something I said that was usually off base or downright stupid. I always listened the next night.

Though the total time of the car ride was under thirty minutes (unless the weather was bad) I sometimes would sit in my driveway to listen to the end of a story she would tell about her mom or sweet puppy Penny, especially her amazing superhero grammy Helen. I remember when she announced she was getting married, and I could not wait to pick my wife up from work to tell her. It was like a friend was getting married, I won’t lie, I cried tears of joy for her when she announced it.

In the wee hours of Friday morning, just after I dropped my wife off at work I had barely driven two tenths of a mile on my way home when Amy announced she was leaving her show behind. Her last show would be on Sunday night/Monday morning. One more show after the Super Bowl. I immediately turned the car around and drove back to her place of work to see if she had gone in yet so I could tell her the news, she had already gone inside.

I’m not sure I will listen to the show after she leaves, silence on the car ride might be the best option, I’m not sure yet. One thing I do know is I will miss hearing that cheery voice for that half hour five days a week.

I’m happy for Amy that she is happy in her life with her husband Bob, but sad for all of us who valued her so much and for being our friend for the 12 years she was the host of “After Hours with Amy Lawrence”.

I will be listening to that final show on Sunday from 3:15 am to 3:45 am, probably for more than the usual half hour. I hope Amy finds another radio gig, with better hours so more people will be able to have a chance to hear what a treasure she is.

A final word to Amy, not that she will see this, I think I can speak for all of your listeners, we will miss you very much, good luck in the future. I hope you have as many smiles in the future as you have given us through the years, enjoy your life!!!.
