Friday night in Fairport Harbor at Greig Field the Fairport Harding Skipper hosted the Wickliffe Blue Devils. Both teams came in 1-2 and had lost their last two contests. In the end the school that made more big plays and less mistakes won the game as the Skippers prevailed 20-7 in front of a large crowd.

With 6:56 left in the first quarter the Skipper struck first when junior running back Maverrick Piotrowski rumbled 34 yards to the end zone giving Harding 7-0 lead.

The Blue Devils couldn’t get anything going offensively against the Skipper’s defense. One of the defensive stops was an interception by Harding senior Jeremy Sundman. Unfortunately, Sundman was injured a few plays later and taken from the field on a gurney and taken to the hospital. Good news is that reports are positive on Sundman’s health.

The Skippers seemed motivated by the events and fought hard as senior QB Gabe Lawson who normally just plays on offense took over in the secondary for Sundman and looked as though he played the position his entire life.

Lawson struck next on the offensive side of the ball when he connected on a 17-yard pass to junior James Gadomski in the end zone to give the Skippers a 13-0 lead after they failed to convert the two-point conversion.

Things only got worse for the Blue Devils and better for Lawson and the Skippers as he intercepted a Wickliffe pass that set up a 20-yard touchdown run by junior Kevin Castellano extending the Skippers lead to 20-0.

Wickliffe got in the end zone with 4:09 left on the game clock when senior Vince Gargiulo plowed across the goal line from one yard out. Wickliffe senior place kicker Eliza Wills converted the extra point, the first of her career to pull Wickliffe to within 13 points at 20-7.

The ball changed hands a couple times, but the Skippers were able to run out the clock and secure the victory and improve to 2-2 on the season while the Blue Devils fall to 1-3.

The Skippers will make the long journey to Freemont and Harmon Field at Don Paul Stadium next Friday to take on the North Central High Eagles at 7 pm. The Blue Devils will return home to Wickliffe Memorial Stadium to take on the Brooklyn Hurricanes at 7 pm.
