The Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-1 Saturday evening from Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. This is the 19th game in a row the Indians have beaten the Tigers.
The Indians scored first for the second time in the series; Sandy Leon led off the third inning with a walk, followed by another walk to Oscar Mercado and a single by Cesar Hernandez. Jose Ramirez doubled to make it 2-0 Cleveland. The Indians would extend their lead in the fifth. Jose Ramirez got a one out walk and then stole second base. Carlos Santana doubled to center to score Ramirez to make it 3-0.
Brad Hand came into the game to close things out in the ninth, and it got interesting. Willi Castro walked to lead off the ninth, then Jonathan Schoop reached via catcher's interference. Jacoby Jones pinched hit for Christian Stewart and hit an RBI double to left field to score Castro. But that was the last gasp for the Tigers, who dropped their nineteenth straight game to Cleveland.
Shane Bieber was excellent once again. He went seven innings, allowing just three hits, striking out 11, and walking one. His counterpart Spencer Turnbull didn't fare as well he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three. Bieber once again put his name in unique company. He now has 54 strikeouts in five starts, which marks him tied for the third most since 1906 with strikeouts through five starts . The two guys he trails? Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson.
In Sunday's series finale, the Indians will send Adam Plutko to the hill who is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and the Tigers will counter with Michael Fulmer who's 0-0 with a 6.35 ERA.
