Captains wreck Hot Rods 9-2

The Lake County Captains and Bowling Green Hot Rods played game two of their five game series on Saturday Night at Classic Park. The Captains left not much doubt early as they pounded the Hot Rods 9-2.

The Captains got on the board early with two runs in the first inning. The trouble began for Bowling Green starter Chris Pike with two outs in the inning and Li-Jen Chu singled to center field. Gavin Collen followed with a shot over the center field fence to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. The home run was Collins' fourth of the season.

The Hot Rods responded in the top of the second inning with a two-run inning in the second off Captains starter Juan Hillman. The Hot Rods runs, like the Captains runs in the first came on a two-run home run off the bat of Garrett Whitley. The long ball by Whitley was his third of the season and tied the game 2-2.

The Captains took over from that point scoring seven unanswered runs. Four runs in the fourth inning, and single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings, to move into a comfortable 8-2 lead. 

Five of the nine Captains runs were unearned. Pike gave up six runs, two earned in four innings, in a losing effort. Pike surrendered six hits and struck out three. With the loss Pike false to 0-1, this was his first start of the season, his ERA is 4.50. Hillman picked up the win for Lake County. The lefty went five strong innings allowing two runs, both earned on three hits. He issued two base on balls and struck out six Bowling Green batters. With the win Hillman improves to break even at 3-3 with a 6.54 ERA.
Several Captains had nice nights at the plate. Chu, Collins and Emmanuel Tapia each had two hits and scored two runs in the game. Collins also had two RBI.

The Captains and Hot Rods will play games two and three of the series on Sunday afternoon, game one which is the conclusion of a suspended game will start at 1:30 p.m. The suspended game will resume in the top of the fifth inning with two outs. Bowling Green starting pitcher JD. Busfield had a perfect game threw the first four innings. The Hot Rods led 2-0, Brady Aiken had started for the Captains and was responsible for the two runs, both earned through four and two thirds innings. Neither manager has announced who will be on the mound when the game resumes. For the regularly scheduled game which will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game, Willy Ortiz will be on the mound for the Hot Rods. Ortiz, a righty is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA. Southpaw Tanner Tully will make the start for Lake County. Tully is 2-4 with a 2.59 ERA.
