(PAINESVILLE, OH) - Donald Trump will be the 47th president of the United States of America defeating current vice president Kamala Harris becoming only the second president in history two win two nonconsecutive terms joining Grover Cleveland who was the 22nd and 24th president of the US from 1885-1889 in his first term and 1893 to 1897 in his second term.
In the Senate race between Sherrod Brown who was looking for his fourth term and Trump backed Bernie Moreno, Moreno flipped the seat in the senate to Republican winning the seat with 50.2 percent of the vote while Brown earned 46.4 percent. Libertarian Don Kissick finished a distant third with 3.4 percent of the vote. Lake County was almost right on with the rest of the state in percentage points. Sherrod Brown had an unofficial final tally of 57,177 votes to winner Bernie Moreno's 63,024 votes.
With West Virginia and Montana also flipping seats from the Democrats, the Republicans now own the senate Majority.
While this was a volatile election from start to finish with rhetoric being slung from both parties, we take a look at how Lake County voted in this election compared to previous elections.
This election Lake County voted overwhelming for Donald Trump with 71,622 votes or 56.5 percent compared to 53,586 which equates to 42.3 percent for Kamala Harris for over a 14 percent gap, with only nine percent of the vote in the county still outstanding.
The 2020 election was nearly identical as Trump lost nationally, but in Lake County, Trump won with 56 percent of the vote to current president Joe Biden's 42.5 percent. In 2016 Trump again led Lake county with 55 percent to Hilary Clinton's 39.5 percent. Lake County hasn't been a democratic county since the 2008 election which was former president Barack Obama's first term as he won the county by a razor thin margin of 49.6 percent against John McCain who had 48.7 percent.
Talking to residents outside of a polling station a Trump supporter was asked why he thought former president Trump was the best choice. "The price of everything was down" he said, "We were not involved in any wars, we weren't sending money to other countries, and we building a wall and keeping illegal immigrants and drugs out of the country." he finished.
Another resident, this time a Harris supporter, was asked the same question. "She represents what I hope all Americans do and that's hope for a better future for our kids. I have three daughters and I don't want them to have less rights than anyone else. The government should not have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body" she concluded.
Lake County was a good sample of what happened nationally as Donald Trump held onto swing state North Carolina, and flipped Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin putting him well over the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to win the election. The other two other swing states Arizona, and Nevada have yet to be called, but show that Trump is ahead in those states as well.
Kamala Harris has called President-Elect Donald Trump to concede and congratulate him on his victory and is schedule to speak at 4 pm on Wednesday to deliver her concession speech
