On Wednesday night at 8:48 pm the aviation world was shaken as an U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 Regional Jet collided and crashed into the Potomac River in Washington D.C. There are no survivors. There were three crew members on the army black hawk and 60 passengers and four crewmembers aboard the AA jet, all were lost.
The AA flight originated from Wichita, Kansas and was starting their decent to land at Reagan National Airport when the black hawk helicopter apparently went upward colliding with the jet, there was an explosion, and both aircraft fell into the icy waters of the Potomac River.
Brave first responders were on the scene and in the water within ten minutes of the collision, but it was too late as nothing could be done.
Several hours later the mission switched from search and rescue to recovery.
The crash was the first major aviation tragedy in the U.S. since February 12, 2009, when Colgan Air Flight 3407 that originated from Newark, New Jersey and crashed into a house in Clarence Center, New York killing 49 aboard and one person in the house.
