2013 produced the same old mess for Browns in Berea
Opinon by Tim Shirer
Well here we are about to end one calendar year and begin another in Cleveland and one constant remains, the Cleveland Browns are a mess.
2013 began for Cleveland sports with so much promise. The Cleveland Indians hired a new manager, they didn’t just hire a new manager they hired the best manager available in Terry Francona. We know how the season went for the Indians. Being an admitted honk for the Tribe I am not going to gloat, even though I probably should.
Last January specifically on the 11th of that month Jimmy Haslem and Joe Banner told us in Haslem’s words about hiring Rob Chudzinski as the Browns head coach, "I think we said here 11 days ago, despite what a lot of people in the room said, that we did not have a clear cut choice. We did not have a clear cut favorite. We knew in our minds these are the characteristics that we wanted. I feel very confident we got the right guy." Well, either Haslem was blatantly lying knowing the guy they really wanted went to Philadelphia or he really believed Chudzinski was his guy and if Chud was as bad as Banner and Haslem made him out to be at the press conference announcing the firing, Haslem is just a plain lousy judge of character. Neither of those two scenario’s is a good thing for Browns fans.
Once again less than one calendar year after hiring “the right guy” Haslem’s words, not mine, the Browns are once again looking for a new head coach. Sounds like the same old Browns.
Oh wait a minute I better not say “same old Browns” that angers and offends Haslem. Listen Jimmy Boy, you have been here for about 18 months, you haven’t been offended or angered until you have spent 15 years wanting to believe the load of garbage that comes out of the Browns Berea complex year after year.
Look I am far from the guy who is going to go to bat for Browns fans most of the time. Actually most people that know me, know that I am very, very critical of Browns fans.
At this point though Jimmy Boy, even I feel bad for Browns fans. Even as much as I criticize and call them some names that are deserving for some, they do not deserve the cheap shot sucker punch you gave them squarely to the jaw on Sunday night.
As far as I am concerned right now on this day Haslem and Banner rank right up there with two of Cleveland’s biggest sports villains Art Modell and LeBron James. Yes, Haslem and Banner didn’t move the team and or embarrass the city on national TV, they might have done worse, they prolonged the agony of being a Browns fans even longer. Which really is unforgivable.
