Captains rebound to stop Lugnuts 5-2

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Lansing Lugnuts played the third game of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park. The first two games of the series went to the Lugnuts as they sent their fourth and fifth starters to the mound and held the Captains bats in check. On Sunday the Lugnuts sent their statistically best pitcher Josh Winckowski to the mound, he entered the game 6-2 with a 1.90 ERA. The Captains belted around Winckowski and going on to beat the Lugnuts 5-2.
The Captains got on the board first in the second inning with a single run when Captains first baseman Mitch Reeves left the park with his home run of the season.
The Captains added three more runs in the third inning when Quentin Holmes led off the inning with a double to right field gap. Holmes moved to third base with Hosea Nelson at the plate and Winckowski uncorked a wild pitch. Nelson then singled to right field driving home Holmes giving the Captains a 2-0 lead. With Jose Fermin at the plate Nelson stole second base, his third steal of the season. Fermin then drew a base on balls to put runners on first and second for Tyler Freeman, Freeman could not move the runners as he popped up to the catcher for the first out of the inning. Nelson and Fermin then executed a double steal, Nelson’s fourth and Fermin’s eighth of the season. Will Benson then struck out for the second out of the inning. Ruben Cardenas kept the inning alive by drawing a base on balls to load the bases and then Josh Rolette singled to center field driving home Nelson and Fermin to extend the Captains lead to 4-0.
The Lugnuts put their first run on the board in the fourth inning when Rafael Lantigua doubled with one out. D.J. Neal then singled to drive home Lantigua with the Lugnuts first run.
The Lugnuts pulled to within two runs in the top eighth with a run off Captains reliever Kellen Rholl. Rholl entered the game to begin the eighth inning in relief of Skylar Arias. He issued a base on balls to the first hitter he faced Nick Podkul. He then struck out Jake Brodt. Gabriel Moreno then grounded into a fielder’s choice, Podkul was retired at second base, but Moreno ended up at second base on a throwing error by Jose Fermin. Rholl then hit Ryan Gold with a pitch to put men at first and second for Lantigua. Lantigua singled and Moreno scored the Lugnuts second run. Rholl then issued a base on balls to Neal but got Jesse Severino on strikes looking to end any further threat in the inning.
The Captains added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Josh Rolette drew a base on balls to leadoff the inning. Rolette moved to third when Reeves doubled to left field. Daniel Schneemann then drew a base on balls to load the bases. Rolette then scored when Holmes hit a sacrifice fly to left field to push the Captains lead to 5-2.
Captains starter Luis Oviedo picked up the win. Oviedo pitched five innings allowing only one run, it was earned on four hits. He also issued two base on balls and struck out one Lugnuts hitter. With the win he improves to 6-2 with a 3.96 ERA. Winckowski took the loss for the Lugnuts. With the loss he falls to 6-3 with a 2.30 ERA.
The Captains and Lugnuts will complete the series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. weather permitting as the forecast is calling rain and thunderstorms for most of the daytime hours. If the game is played Troy Watson will be on the mound for the Lugnuts. Watson, a righthander is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA. Cody Morris also a righthander will make the start for Lake County. Morris is 3-2 with a 3.34 ERA..
