(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains opened a three-game series with the Burlington Bees (Los Angeles Angels) on Saturday Night. The crowd of 6,206 went home happy as the Captains exterminated the Bees 11-3.
The Captains struck first in the bottom of the first inning when with one out Richard Palacios recorded his first hit with the Captains. Palacios was the Cleveland Indians third round draft pick in this year's June draft out of Towson State. After Burlington starter Jose Soriano struck out Jonathan Laureano on a called third strike, he issued a base on balls to Nolan Jones to put runners on first and second. Jose Vicente took advantage as he belted a laser shot down the left field line and Palacios scored the first run of the game and give the Captains a 1-0 lead. Soriano got Will Benson to pop out to end the inning and prevent any further damage.
The Captains basically ended any suspense in the second inning who would win the game when they put seven runs on the board in the inning knocking Soriano from the game. Soriano left the game when the score was relatively close at 4-0 with the bases loaded as the Captains had already scored three runs in the inning. James Ziemba came into the game to replace Soriano. The first batter Ziemba faced was Will Benson. Benson is a power hitter who strikes out a lot. Chances were for Ziemba that the at bat would go one of two ways. Unfortunately for the six-foot ten-inch Ziemba things did not go the way he wanted as Benson sent a pitch over the right field fence for a grand slam. The Captains now led 8-0. In Benson's next plate appearance in the fourth inning Ziemba drilled Benson. Benson was not happy and after a stare at Ziemba and the Bees dugout he trotted to first base.
The Bees got on the board in the top of the fifth inning off Captains starter Gregori "Vasky" Vasquez.
The Captains came back in the bottom of the inning and put three more runs on the board, all off Ziemba.
With the Captains up 11-1 to start the seventh inning Maiker Manzanillo replaced Vasquez on the mound for Lake County. The Bees touched Manzanillo for a run in the inning to close the gap to nine runs at 11-2.
The Bees added a run in the ninth inning off Nick Sandlin to close out the scoring at 11-3.
Vasquez picked up the win for the Captains. The righthander went six innings allowing one run, it was earned on five hits. “Vasky” also issued one base on balls and struck out five Burlington hitters. With the win Vasquez improves to 5-4 with a 3.50 ERA. Soriano took the loss for Burlington, he went one and two thirds innings allowing seven runs, all earned on seven hits. He also issued three base on balls and struck out one Captains batters. With the loss he falls to 0-4 with a 7.64 ERA.
The two clubs will continue the three-game series on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Denny Brady will take the mound for the Bees. He is a righty and is 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA. Francisco Perez will make the start for Lake County. Perez, a southpaw is 7-6 with a 4.05 ERA.
