Captains shut out by Whitecaps 5-0 on Cleveland Sports History Night

On Saturday night, the Lake County Captains celebrated Cleveland Sports History Night. The West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit) visited Classic Park. The Whitecaps who entered the night with a record of 28-11 in the second half and 73-33 overall continued their dominance as they rolled over the Captains 5-0 in front of the season’s largest crowd of 8,672.

Once again, the Captains offense was a no show as their bats were silent and they managed only six hits and seven base runners. 

Meanwhile the West Michigan Whitecaps offense showed up and produced. Scoring runs in four different innings.

The Whitecaps did not get on the board until the fifth inning, but once they did they put runs on the board in every in after, except for the sixth inning. They scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings and two runs in the eighth inning.

Lefty Juan Hillman, started on the mound for Lake County and took the loss. Hillman went seven and one third innings allowing four runs on nine hits and struck out four batters. With the loss Hillman falls to 5-7 with a 5.89 ERA.

Whitecaps starter Eudis Idrogo picked up the win. Idrogo pitched six scoreless innings allowing only four hits, he struck out six and issued one base on balls. With the win Idrogo improves to 6-4 with a 3.07 ERA.

Saturday night marked the 14th time in 2017 that the Captains have been shut out.

The Captains and Whitecaps will play a twin bill on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Starting pitchers for game one will be Alfred Gutierrez and Sean Brady. Gutierrez, is a right hander and will be on the mound for West Michigan and is 8-5 with a 3.36 ERA. Brady, will be on the mound for Lake County. Brady is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA.
