Blue Devils Walt Cable notches 1,000th point as Wickliffe downs Cardinal 81-57

(WICKLIFFE, OH) - Friday at the Campus of Wickliffe the Blue Devils hosted the Cardinal Huskies (2-12). The Devils were attempting to start the season 8-4 after a win over the Lakeside Dragons on Tuesday night. Wickliffe senior Walt Cable entered the game with 985 points needing just 15 to hit the magic 1,000-point plateau. Both Cable and his Blue Devils teammates accomplished their goals as the Blue Devils ran past the Huskies 81-57.
It did not take the Blue Devils long to jump out to a lead, with 5:05 left on the clock in the opening period Cable got on the board giving Wickliffe an 8-5 lead. Then with 3:59 left he hit his first of three 3-point baskets, needing only 10 more points for the magical mark. Just 32 seconds later Cable was fouled, he hit both free throws and now had seven points, he was just getting started. 19 seconds later after Wickliffe stole the ball from the Huskies Cable dropped in a layup giving the Blue Devils a 15-7 lead. After some good Blue Devils defense preventing the Huskies from scoring and with 2:47 left the opening quarter clock Cable hit another triple giving Wickliffe an 18-7 lead. The drama was in full force, was the senior Blue Devils guard going to get to 1,000 points in the first quarter? He answered the question ending all doubt with 24 second left on the clock when he drained a three from the far corner giving Wickliffe a 25-12 lead and receiving a loud ovation from the home crowd as Wickliffe public address announcer extraordinaire Scott Tennant announced the feat to the crowd as play stopped and a smiling Cable along side his coach Marc Lewis accepted congratulations and took pictures at half court. Not surprisingly Cable was the leading scorer in the game with 15 points, senior Carter Sindelar paced the Huskies with five first quarter points.
From the end of the first quarter on the result of the game was never really in doubt with the Blue Devils leading by as many as 19 points which was the Wickliffe lead 48-29 at the halftime break. Cable led all scorers with 20 points at the break. Sindelar continued to pace Cardinal with 11 at the intermission.
Wickliffe’s lead grew to 60-36 with 3:08 left in the third period when senior Jake Beal hit his second three of the contest. With 1:12 left junior Drew Rossman got on the board with a putting the Blue Devils in front 63-38. The Huskies did score the next six points to cut their deficit to 63-44 when the third quarter buzzer sounded. Cable continued to lead everyone in scoring with 22 points and Sindelar led the Huskies with 12 points.
The final quarter featured a lot of both benches, but the Huskies did cut the Blue Devils lead to 14 points with 5:24 left when senior Zach Caldwell drained a three and the Blue Devils lead was at 67-53. Lewis immediately sent his Blue Devil starters to the scorers table to check back in. Wickliffe outscored the Huskies 14-4 in the final 5:23 to earn the 81-57 win.
Cable finished with 27 points and now has a career total of 1,012. The Blue Devils had four players including Cable in double figures, Wheeler with 17, senior Demario Donner 11 and Beal 10. Sindelar paced the Cardinals with 12 points, the Cardinals had three players in double figures.
The Blue Devils will be in action next on Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr Day at Chagrin Falls to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. if the forecasted near zero temperatures does not cause school to be cancelled.
