(BROOKLYN, OH) — Harvey Red Raiders traveled to Brooklyn to take on the Hurricanes in a game that the Raiders desperately needed...and a game that they were supposed to win. The Raider took care of business 49-13.
After struggling to an 0-3 start, the Raiders were looking for something to give them a spark, something to turn things around. Sometimes it's a big play, sometimes it's a speech, or sometimes it's a subtle moment in a game that brings a team together.
The Raiders got that moment from Big Z, Zhavier Nurse.
Early in the 1st Quarter, sophomore running back, Chris Burt found himself
being pulled down by a much bigger Hurricanes defender. The defender spent a little extra time on top of Burt, and then decided to hold him down as stepped over top of him (that's a big no-no in sports, ask Tyron Lue). Big Z rushed over and moved the player off Burt, while maintaining his composure, and then the rest of the offense followed!
From that point on, it was the Raiders' night!
Both Chris Burt and Shaun Alston showed why they are the top running backs in the area and ran all over the Hurricanes. Each of them recording TD runs over 50 yards. Alston also took a kick to the house, but it was called back on a clear block to the back! Alston added a 70-yard TD on a throw out to the flat from QB Cavon Wise.
The Raider Defense cleaned things up, forcing three and outs over and over again all night, with Davon Badley leading the way. They still had a few break-downs in the secondary, but the improvement was there, including a more ag-gressive energy in attacking the quarterback and the ball.
The Raiders took a 29-6 lead into the half.
But they didn't stop.
With defensive continuing to force three and outs, the offense needed only two plays to add on to more scores and stretch the lead to 42-6.
From there, the second teamers took over with a solid showing from Ish Jack-son, who added a TD run for the Raiders!
It was a game they were supposed to win, but what I saw was a Raiders team that rallied around each other when the moment was right.
This is a win that could propel them through the rest of season.
It's really no surprise how it happened. In Painesville they say 1-2-3- Raiders, 4-5-6 Family! for a reason. We are better when we come together...just ask Big Z!
Next week Harvey will host the 0-4 Independence Blue Devils at 7 pm at Jack Britt Stadium.
