(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Lansing Lugnuts played a rare 4:00 p.m. game Sunday at Classic Park. It was game two of their three game series. The Lugnuts took game one and came out in game two in a pitcher’s duel 3-2 sending the 2,313 home unhappy.
The Lugnuts got both of their runs in the third inning off Captains starter Thomas Ponticelli. With two outs and Hunter Steinmetz on second base Gabriel Moreno doubled and Steinmetz scored the first run of the game. Griffin Conine followed with a single driving home Moreno to increase the lead to 2-0. Ponticelli then got Ryan Gold on strikes to stop any further scoring.
The Captains got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Josh Rolette reached first base on an error. Daniel Schneemann then doubled and Rolette ended up at third base. After Lansing starter Cobi Johnson fanned the next batter Quentin Holmes singled to right field and Rolette crossed home plate with the Captains first run, cutting the deficit in half to 2-1. The RBI was a nice birthday present for Holmes who turned 20 years old today.
The Captains tied the game in the seventh inning when once again the inning began with Rolette reaching base on an error, this time Rolette ended up at second base. Rolette moved to third base when Schneemann singled to right field. Rolette scored when Makesiondon Kelkboom hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Captains were unable to complete the comeback as the Lugnuts scored a single run in the ninth inning off Captains reliever Kellen Rholl. Rholl took the loss pitching two innings allowing one run on two hits and issuing three base on balls, but he did strike out the side. With the loss Rholl falls to 1-2 with a 1.20 ERA.
Will McAffer picked up the win for the Lugnuts in relief. McAffer went three innings, allowing one run, it was unearned on one hit and he struck out three Captains. With the win he improves to 2-3 with a 4.24 ERA.
The two clubs will complete the series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Eric Pardinho will be on the mound for the Lugnuts. Pardinho is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Alex Royalty will be on the mound for the Captains. Royalty is also a righty and is 4-4 with a 3.90 ERA.
