Captains balk at victory fall to Cedar Rapids 5-4

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Cedar Rapids Kernels played game two of their three game series on Thursday morning at 111 a.m. The Kernels held off a late Captains rally to win game one 5-4. The story was the opposite on Thursday as the Kernels fell behind 4-1 but came all the way back to capture the win 5-4 at Classic Park.
The Captains got on the board first scoring single runs in the first three inning to take a 3-0 lead. The first inning run came when Quentin Holmes led off the game with a single. He then scored when Daniel Schneemann doubled off the left field fence.
The run in the second inning came when Josh Rolette doubled to lead off the frame and was driven home when Cody Farhat tripled to right field giving the Captains a 2-0 lead.
The third run came in the third inning with two outs Jose Fermin single and then was driven home by Ruben Cardenas when he doubled to center field.
The Kernels got on the board in the fourth inning when Gabe Snyder poked his 10th home run of the season over the right-center field fence, cutting the Lake County lead to two runs at 3-1.
The Captains got the run right back in the fifth inning when Schneemann belted his first home run of the season over the right-center field fence extended the lead back to three at 4-1.
Cedar Rapids rallied in the seventh inning off Lake County reliever Luis Araujo. Araujo entered the game to begin the inning in relief of starter Eli Lingos. Araujo gave up an infield single on a ball hit to third baseman Makesiondon Kelkboom. Kelkboom made a nice effort but was unable to retire Albee Wiess at first base. Alex Isola then doubled and Wiess moved to third base. Yeltsin Encarnacion followed with a sacrifice fly to left field and Wiess trotted home with the Kernels second run. Araujo then issued a free pass to Daniel Ozoria to put runners on the corners. Spencer Steer followed with a double driving home Isola pulling the Kernels to within one run at 4-3. Ozoria then scored when Giberto Celestino grounded out tying th game 4-4, Steer moved to third on the play. Two pitches later Steer was awarded home on a balk by Araujo, giving the Kernels their first lead of the game at 5-4.
Cedar Rapids starter Luis Rijo picked up the win. Rijo pitched six innings allowing four runs all earned on nine hits. He also issued one base on balls and struck out three Captains. With the win Rijo improves to 3-6 with a 2.67 ERA. Araujo took the loss for the Captains. He pitched one forgetful inning allowing four runs, all earned on three base hits, one base on balls and one strike out. He also balked during the inning. With the loss Araujo falls to 2-4 with a 3.96 ERA.
The two clubs will play the final game of the series on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Righthander Andrew Cabezas will be on the mound for the Kernels. Cabezas is 4-5 with a 3.66 ERA. The Captains will send Thomas Ponticelli to the hill. Ponticelli also a righty is 3-2 with a 5.17 ERA..
