Captains bat heat up in 13-6 pounding of Whitecaps

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and West Michigan Whitecaps played the third game of their three-game series on Monday night. The two teams split the first two games. The Captains won game one 6-4 and the Caps took game two 6-5. The Captains took away all doubt early with a six run first inning to roll to a 13-6 win in front of 2,549 fans at Classic Park.
The Captains jumped on Whitecaps starter Wilkel Hernandez right away. The first seven Captains reached base. The first seven reached by three singles, one ground rule double, a triple, base on balls and a fielding error. Hernandez did manage to strikeout Josh Rolette for the only out he recorded. Connor Smith then singled and the was the end of the night for Hernandez. When the dust settled, and the inning ended the Captains led 6-0. Big hits in the inning included the ground rule double by Clark Scolamiero a two RBI triple by Bo Naylor.
The Whitecaps came back with two runs in the second inning to cut the Captains lead to four runs. Captains starter Matt “Shaggy” Turner did not have his best stuff as the Whitecaps squared a lot of pitches up early.
The Captains added another run in the second inning after Scolamiero doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a single by Jose Fermin and the scored when Naylor grounded into a double play increasing the Captains lead to 7-2.
Turner’s night ended after the fourth inning when he gave up three more runs. His defense did let him down. None of the runs in the inning were earned. Daniel Schneemann committed a key error in the inning, Schneeman who has been on fire with the bat hitting .304 and went 3 for 4 on the night with 4 RBI.
The Captains offense kept coming when they scored two more runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth inning.
The Whitecaps added a run in the eighth inning off Captains reliever Luis Araujo.
Captains reliever Kellen Rholl who came on in relief of Turner to start the fifth inning pitched two scoreless frames and picked up the win. The win for Rholl was his second of the year improving to 2-4 with a 1.47 ERA. Hernandez took the loss for West Michigan and falls to 7-7 with a 4.23 ERA.
The Captains will have an off day on Tuesday and will be back in action on Wednesday at Classic Park when the host the South Bend Cubs for three games. The Cubs will send Faustino Carrera to the hill. Carrera is 6-6 with a 3.50 ERA. The Captains will send Ethan Hankins to the mound. Hankins has no record with a 2.25 ERA in one start for Lake County.
