Captains comeback to slay Dragons 5-3

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Dayton Dragons played the final game of their four-game series on Tuesday afternoon. The Captains have taken two of the first three including Monday night when they pounded the Dragons 13-2. The finale was a little closer as the Captains came from behind to slay the Dragons 5-3 in front of 2,254 happy fans at Classic Park.
The Dragons took the early lead with two runs in the second inning off Captains starter Shane McCarthy. McCarthy a righthander gave up a solo home run to right off the bat of Matt Lloyd to put Dayton on the board. Jay Schuyler followed with a double to right field. Cameron Warren then singled down the right field line but was thrown out on the play. Schuyler scored Dayton’s second run of the game on the single.
The Captains got on the board in the fourth inning when Raynel Delgado led off with a double off Dayton starter Eduardo Salazar. After Jonathan Engelmann flew out to left field and Daniel Schneemann at the plate Salazar balked and Delgado moved to third base. Schneemann then drew a base on balls. Salazar then uncorked a wild pitch and Schneemann advanced to second putting men on second and third for Miguel Jerez who was fresh off the Injured list. Jerez got the job done as he grounded out to shortstop and Delgado scored putting the Captains on the board and cutting the lead to 2-1.
The Dragons extended the lead back to two runs in the sixth inning when Michael Siani doubled to lead off the frame. He then stole third base. The steal was his 42nd of the season. Claudio Finol then singled and Siani trotted home with the Dragons third run.
The Captains tied that game in the seventh inning with a pair of runs driven in on a triple by Jose Fermin. Fermin drove in Josh Rolette who had reached on a base on balls and Clark Scolamiero who had reached on a single.
The Captains took the lead with two more runs in the eighth inning when Engelmann doubled with one out in the inning and then scored when Schneemann came to the plate and singled to left field to give the Captains their first lead of the game at 4-3. After Jerez flew out Rolette doubled to left field and Schneemann scored the Captains fifth run increasing the lead to 5-3.
Zach Draper picked up the win for the Captains. Draper relieved McCarthy to start the fifth inning and completed the game going five strong innings allowing only one run, it was earned on three base hits. He also had six strikeouts. With the win Draper improves to 8-4 with a 3.25 ERA. Eddy Demurias took the loss for the Dragons. Demurias pitched one disastrous inning allowing two runs on three hits. With the loss Demurias falls to 3-4 with a 4.54 ERA.
The Captains will now head on the road for their final road series of the regular season. The series will be a three-game series in Bowling Green, Kentucky against the Hot Rods. Game time for game one is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Hot Rods have not announced their starting pitcher. The Captains will send lefty Shaggy Turner to the hill. Turner is 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA.
